Zoutsloot

Most of the salt shacks ["keten/keet"] were located near the Zoutsloot. Street names such as Westerkeetstraat, Oosterkeetstraat, Zoutsloot and Zoutstraat refer to this past. With the discovery of salt in Twente, the salt industry disappeared from Harlingen. Harlinger criminals could be sentenced to the brine tub, a large ton of salt water in which they had to stand for a long time.

In the first half of the twentieth century, the neighborhood was greatly neglected and many houses were in poor condition. In 1964, the Hein Buisman Foundation was founded by the Leeuwarden butter manufacturer Hein Buisman. It has since restored many houses in Harlingen. Zoutsloot 43 was the first house to be tackled by the foundation. The bronze plaques indicate when a house has been restored.
